Frequently Asked Questions
Every family’s story is unique, and I want your photography experience to feel just as personal. From choosing the right session to preparing for your day and selecting your favorite images, I’m here to guide you through every step. Below are answers to some of the questions families ask most often.
When should I book my photography session?
I recommend reaching out as early as possible, especially for maternity and newborn sessions. Because sessions are limited each month, booking in advance allows us to plan your experience thoughtfully and reserve a date that works beautifully for your family.
When is the best time for a maternity session?
Maternity sessions are typically planned during the later stages of pregnancy, when your beautiful baby bump is beautifully defined while you are still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience. We’ll discuss the ideal timing during your consultation.
When should I book my newborn session?
It’s best to contact me during your pregnancy so we can reserve a tentative timeframe around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we’ll finalize the session date based on your little one’s arrival.
Do you provide outfits for maternity sessions?
Yes. My studio offers a thoughtfully selected luxury wardrobe of beautiful maternity gowns and styling options. We’ll work together to choose looks that complement your vision and make you feel confident and beautiful.
Where do newborn sessions take place?
Newborn sessions take place in my private studio in the Hopewell Valley area of New Jersey. The studio is designed to provide a calm, comfortable environment where you and your baby can relax while I carefully document those precious first days.
Are newborn sessions safe for my baby?
Your baby’s comfort and safety are always my highest priorities. Sessions are gentle and unhurried, with careful handling throughout. I never rush a pose and always allow time for feeding, soothing, and cuddling whenever your baby needs it.
When is the best time to have a maternity photoshoot?
The ideal time is usually between 30-36 weeks of pregnancy, when the belly is beautifully rounded but you’re still comfortable for posing. I will guide you on the ideal window during your consultation.
What should I wear for my maternity photoshoot session?
An exclusive luxury wardrobe of designer maternity gowns is available for your session. During your planning consultation I will help you hand-select looks that complement your aesthetic and the styling of your session. You are also very welcome to bring personal pieces you would like to incorporate.
Can my partner and older children be included?
Absolutely — and I would warmly encourage it. Some of the most cherished moments from a maternity session are the quiet, intimate frames between partners, or the wonder on an older sibling’s face as they meet the bump. I will walk you through timing and styling for everyone joining you during your planning consultation.
How should I prepare for my session?
After booking, I will send you my complete maternity preparation guide — covering everything from skincare and hydration in the days leading up to your session, to hair and makeup recommendations, to ideas for meaningful keepsakes you may wish to bring (ultrasound prints, your baby’s first shoes, a treasured family piece). My goal is for you to arrive feeling calm, prepared, and entirely in the moment.
When is the right time to book my photo session?
We recommend to schedule your newborn’s photo session ahead of time. This way, we can chat about how you’d like the session to look, the styling, props, color themes and go over any questions you might have. We know life gets really busy once your baby is here, so we’ll get all the planning done early to make things smoother for you.
What is the ideal timing for a newborn photo session after birth?
Newborn photo sessions are ideally done within the first 2-4 weeks after birth to capture the earliest moments of your baby’s life when they are still very sleepy and flexible. Ahead of your session, you’ll receive a simple Prep Guide with tips to get both you and your baby ready. We understand new parents have a lot on their plates, so our process is designed to be stress-free. Just bring your baby and their nourishment, and we will handle the details.
How long does a newborn session typically last?
Newborn sessions can last between 2-4 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and comforting breaks to keep your baby content.
Can parents and siblings be included in the photos?
Absolutely, we love including family members in newborn sessions! It’s a great way to capture the new bond and celebrate your growing family.
Do I need to bring any props or accessories?
I provide a fully curated, heirloom-quality collection of wraps, bonnets, headbands, outfits, and props — all hand-selected and styled to coordinate with your chosen color palette. You are very welcome to bring meaningful personal pieces — a family heirloom, a special blanket, or a treasured keepsake — and I will incorporate them thoughtfully.
What if my baby is fussy during the session?
Babies are babies — and I plan for it. I am highly experienced in newborn soothing techniques and work with patience and gentleness throughout every session. Your baby’s comfort and safety always take precedence, and I have the time set aside to wait for the most peaceful moments naturally.
What should parents and siblings wear to the session.
Soft, solid tones in neutral or muted palettes work beautifully — creams, oatmeal, sage, dove grey, soft taupe — and keep the focus where it belongs: on your baby. I recommend avoiding logos, prominent patterns, or bright contrasting colors. Clothing should fit close to the body to maintain clean lines in the imagery, and please ensure hands and nails are well-groomed as they will be visible in the portraits. I will guide you through complete wardrobe selection during your design consultation.
What should we wear for a family photoshoot?
Start with one outfit you already love — for most families, that’s Mom’s — and build everyone else’s wardrobe around it. Aim for three to five coordinating colors rather than exact matches; soft neutrals, muted earth tones, and gentle seasonal palettes tend to photograph as timeless family photography rather than dated trends. Texture, like a knit sweater or linen shirt, adds warmth without competing with everyone’s expressions.
How do we choose a family photography style that fits us?
Some families are drawn to classic, posed portraits; others prefer a candid, lifestyle approach that captures natural interaction rather than staged smiles. Neither is more correct than the other — the best professional family photos are the ones that actually feel like your family. Reviewing a photographer’s portfolio for consistency and warmth is usually the fastest way to know if their style matches your vision.
Can pets be included in our family photoshoot?
Yes. Pets are part of the family, and they’re always welcome as part of the session. The only consideration is temperament — if your pet tends to get anxious in new environments, it can help to have a friend or family member on hand to step in partway through, so we can still capture a few portraits without you being pulled in two directions.
How long does a professional family photography session take?
Most family sessions run between 45 minutes and an hour, which is enough time to capture a full range of portraits — the whole group together, parents alone, and individual moments with each child — without asking young children to hold their patience longer than they reasonably can.
What's the difference between candid and posed family photography?
Posed family photography leans on classic, composed arrangements — everyone looking at the camera, intentional positioning. A more candid family photoshoot captures genuine interaction as it happens: a hug, a shared laugh, a piggyback ride. Most sessions here blend both, starting with a few posed portraits and then letting the rest unfold naturally.
How far in advance should we book our family photography session?
Because sessions are limited each month to protect the quality and pacing of every appointment, booking four to six weeks ahead is recommended — especially for peak seasons like fall, when demand for outdoor family photoshoots is highest.
Can grandparents or extended family join our family photoshoot?
Absolutely. Multi-generational sessions are some of the most meaningful family photography I create — grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins can all be part of the day, whether as the full focus of the session or woven into a handful of portraits alongside your immediate family.
Where can I find family photography ideas for my session?
Beyond wardrobe, think about the season and light you’re drawn to — golden hour in an open field feels very different from a crisp, structured autumn setting. During your planning call, we’ll talk through family photography ideas together, from location to color palette, so the final images feel personal rather than generic.
What is baby milestone photography?
Baby milestone photography is a series of sessions spaced through your baby’s first year — typically newborn, sitter (around 6–8 months), and standing (around 10–12 months) — designed to document how your baby grows and changes, rather than relying on a single session to capture an entire year.
When should I book my baby's sitter session?
The sitter stage typically falls between six and eight months, when babies can sit up independently but aren’t yet crawling away. Because that window is short, many parents book their sitter session as early as three to four months old to secure a preferred date, with the exact timing adjusted once your baby is developmentally ready.
What's included in a set of baby first year photos?
A full first-year collection usually includes a newborn session in the first one to two weeks, a sitter session around six to eight months, and a standing or first birthday session around twelve months. Together, these create a genuine visual timeline of baby first year photos, rather than one polished portrait that only shows a single moment.
What is a first birthday photo session?
A first birthday photo session marks the close of your baby’s first year — a dedicated portrait session that can stand alone or lead directly into a cake smash celebration, depending on what you’d like to include.
What's the difference between first birthday photography and a cake smash?
First birthday photography refers to the portrait session itself, which can be styled however you like. A cake smash is one specific element some families choose to include within that session — a playful, messy moment where your baby is given a cake to explore freely. You’re welcome to book a first birthday session with or without one.
How many sessions are typically included in a first-year milestone collection?
Most families choose either three or four sessions across the year — commonly newborn, sitter, and first birthday, or newborn, sitter, standing, and first birthday. Booking the full collection early, often during the second trimester, is the easiest way to make sure every stage is captured without gaps.
When is the best time to schedule each stage — newborn, sitter, and first birthday?
Newborn portraits are best in the first one to two weeks of life; sitter sessions fall between six and eight months; and first birthday sessions are typically scheduled two to three weeks before the actual birthday, which allows time for the finished gallery to be ready in time for the celebration.
What should my baby wear for milestone photography?
Soft, simple, and timeless tends to photograph best — solid colors and gentle textures rather than busy patterns or characters, which can date the images and distract from your baby’s expressions. Outfits and wraps are available in-studio if you’d rather not shop for something new.
What is a cake smash photoshoot?
A cake smash photoshoot is a first birthday tradition where your baby is given their own small cake to explore, dig into, and enjoy without any rules — captured candidly as it happens. It’s typically paired with a set of styled “clean” portraits taken beforehand, so you end up with both the polished images and the joyfully messy ones.
What cake colors work best for cake smash photography?
Soft, light frosting tones tend to photograph the most beautifully — pastels, whites, and creams especially. Deep reds, blacks, and browns are usually avoided, since they can look less appetizing in photographs and are harder to work into a coordinated color palette.
Do I need to bring my own cake for the cake smash photoshoot?
This varies by preference — some families bring a cake from their own baker, especially to accommodate allergies or dietary needs, while others prefer guidance on local bakeries that can match a chosen theme or color scheme. Either way, we’ll talk through it during your planning call so everything is ready for session day.
How long does a cake smash photography session take?
A full session typically runs about an hour, split between a styled “clean” portrait portion and the cake smash itself. Sessions that also include family or sibling portraits may run slightly longer.
When should we schedule our cake smash photoshoot relative to the actual birthday?
Most families book their cake smash photoshoot two to three weeks before the actual birthday, which allows enough time for the images to be fully edited and delivered before the celebration itself.
Can siblings or parents be part of the cake smash photoshoot?
Yes. Many families choose to start with a few portraits that include siblings and parents before the cake comes out, saving the messier portion for the baby alone — that way you get both a cohesive family moment and the classic solo cake smash images.
Is an indoor studio or an outdoor setting better for a cake smash photoshoot?
Both work beautifully, and the right choice usually comes down to personal preference. A studio setting offers a clean, controlled backdrop with consistent lighting, while an outdoor cake smash photoshoot brings in natural texture and season-specific color. We’ll talk through which suits your vision during planning.
Where can I find cake smash photo ideas for my baby's theme?
Popular directions include soft pastel styling with botanical touches, refined single-color palettes for a more elegant look, and seasonal themes tied to your baby’s birth month. During your consultation, we’ll go through cake smash photo ideas together and build a custom backdrop, outfit, and cake design around whatever feels most like your family.
